Hirudotherapy (from Latin “hirudo” – a leech) is treatment by means of leeches. This method of treatment has been used for thousands of years BC. The medicinal leeches were used by Egyptian Pharaohs, and the first mentioning of leeches can be found in the Bible and the Quran. In ancient documents we can find evidence that clever Cleopatra used leeches to heal a serious illness and ordered her servants to draw leeches on the walls of the pyramid for ten generations as a symbol of health. Such great physicians as Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna used leeches to relieve the suffering of patients.
In Medieval Europe the leech was officially recognized in the treatment of many diseases.

In the 19th century 27 million leeches were sold in Russia, and their assistance benefited farmers, beautiful ladies and even kings.

Currently a worldwide rise in interest to leech therapy is observed globally. However, this is not just a trend of fashion. On the contrary, this is a sign that people are becoming wiser and start taking care of their health. This method is becoming popular because it combines the features of pharmacology, acupuncture and body cleansing. The leech is a kind of alive needle, which finds a biologically active location to make one bite. Thus, this method is much easier and safer than traditional acupuncture. Furthermore, leeches inject saliva into blood, which contains more than a hundred of different biologically active compounds which normalize the body.
